A love of fine art is a life long passion. It takes little time for the student to develop a sense of concept, technique and form, but a lifetime for the professional to master.
The Grumbacher brand of art materials has been developed by generations of artists and engineers who have mastered the techniques that produce one of a kind, high quality products. Grumbacher has been serving the artists’ community for over a century.
Our products are what masterpieces are made of.
Artists' color has developed and evolved since the dawn of mankind. Far from their humble earth and charred bone origins, contemporary colors are a sophisticated blending of pigment (the actual color we see) and a vehicle ('binder') that holds the paint together and allows it to adhere to a surface.
Grumbacher specialises in three types of paint: rich and buttery oils, sumptuous, vibrant acrylics and luminscent watercolors. Use the list below to select which one you are interested in!
In the age of faceless automation, each Grumbacher artist's brush is still made in the way pioneered by Max Grumbacher in 1905 - entirely by hand. Yes, there are cheaper and easier ways to produce brushes, but we believe the quality of our art is reflected in the quality of yours. So that is why we we take no shortcuts: every hair is shampooed, combed and shaped like a movie star.

For hundreds of years the world has marveled at the works of art the "old masters" created during the Renaissance. Not only did their achievements arise from training and talent, but also from the techniques they used in preparing their materials. It wasn’t until the 20th century that some of these formulas were rediscovered. Grumbacher has continued this tradition in our painting mediums, grounds and accessories. Not only do we excel in producing a vast range of quality oil color mediums, but also in producing modern formulas for acrylic and watercolor paints.
Grumbacher is dedicated to making sure that the original paint attributes are not compromised but enhanced through the use of painting mediums. These mediums thicken or thin without harming the color’s adhesive, binding or film forming qualities. Myriad effects such as increased flow and rapid or slow drying may be achieved and these mediums have been proven to guard against yellowing and cracking over the course of many generations.
We are expanding our brand to include essential sundries for the artist's studio. From mixing aids to cleaning products, Grumbacher manufactures art accessories with the artist in mind.
